The Yutaka Seino Distinguished Leadership Award

Prof. Guang Ning

Director of Chinese National Clinical Research Center for Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (Shanghai), Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China
Reason: In recognition of his outstanding and long scientific contributions in the Asian diabetes societies, especially, the great contribution of establishment of the largest Bio-Bank in China and the China Noncommunicable Disease Surveillance, which are well known worldwide. In addition, his basic sciences greatly enhanced our understanding of mechanisms of energy expenditure and obesity. His studies were published in many high-impact journals and highly cited. Furthermore, he launched the Journal of Diabetes based on his experiences as editor for several important journals, such as JOE, JME, Nat Rev Endocrinol, and Endocrine Rev. He trained and nurtured many young scientists who are now becoming leaders in the field. He has been demonstrating great leadership in science, education and many important social activities.

The Masato Kasuga Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement

Dr. Norio Harada

Senior Lecturer, Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, Japan
Reason: In recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in incretin study, especially GIP. He directly demonstrated the critical role of GIP signaling in obesity and insulin resistance, using various genetically-modified mice, such as GIP knockout mouse and adipose-specific-GIP receptor knockout mouse. He also identified important molecules necessary for GIP secretion and production in K-cells. He greatly enhanced our understanding of GIP-mediated mechanisms of high fat diet-induced obesity. He is also contributing as an editorial board member of Journal of Diabetes Investigation.

The Xiaoren Pan Distinguished Research Award for Epidemiology of Diabetes in Asia

Prof. Hirohito Sone

Professor and Department Head, Department of Hematology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Niigata University Faculty of Medicine, Japan
Reason: In recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in epidemiological studies, among which The Japan Diabetes Complications Study and Toranomon Hospital Health Management Center Study are highly evaluated. He also serves as steering committee member of many famous cohort studies in Japan. His numerous findings in epidemiology of diabetes (including unique features of East Asia patients with type 2 diabetes) were published in many quality journals. Furthermore, he has been devoting himself training and mentoring many young scientists, who are now emerging in the field.

The Eung Jin Kim Award for Excellent Activities for Diabetes in Asia

Reason: His outstanding international/regional activities in diabetes field are distinguished. He has worked extensively in diabetes clinical services as a health care provider, researcher and manager of diabetes service. Furthermore, he has wide experiences that worked in WHO, AusAID, WDF and many other organizations. Then, now, he works as President Mongolian Diabetes Association and Professor Mongolian National University, furthermore as executive board member for IDF-WPR. He is also a founder of the National Diabetes Center in Mongolia and a team leader of Foot care program in Fiji. He has a long term leadership achievements and contributions to Diabetes Care in Asia.

The Boniface J. Lin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Diabetes Education in Asia

Associate Prof.
Mei Yeh-Chang

Associate Professor, School of Nursing, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan
Reason: Her outstanding contributions to Diabetes Education are truly acknowledged.  She is one of the founders of Taiwanese Association of Diabetes Education (TADE) and worked as many roles (the director, executive director and secretary-general) in TADE.  She has worked as a teaching faculty in National Taiwan University (NTU) and NTU Teaching Hospital for long period.  Furthermore, she created the teaching content of core course of diabetes education and developed different workshops for advanced.  Her devoted contribution has connected over 500 CDEs (including physicians, dieticians, nurses and pharmacists) and her most important performance is to train many diabetes educators and improvement of diabetes care in Taiwan.
