Prof. Kishio Nanjo

Wakayama Rosai Hospital
Reason: In recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions and leadership in the Asian diabetes society, especially, establishing the concept of "molecular diabetology" in Asia. He is one of the pioneers who found genetic mutations associated with diabetes such as insulin Wakayama. He also contributed to establishment of the molecular diabetology study group in Asia, which have been producing many collaborative studies on genetics of diabetes and its complications and nurturing young researchers who are now becoming leaders in the field.

Prof. Hail Kim

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
Reason: In recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements in understanding fundamental roles of serotonin on diabetes as well as energy metabolism, and obesity. He has been consistently investigating critical roles of serotonin in metabolism-related oragans and discovered the serotonin-regulated pancreatic β-cell proliferation during pregnancy, and the serotonin-associated gut-liver axis.

The Eung Jin Kim Award for Excellence in Diabetes Care in Asia

Mr. Kwang-Hoon Kim

Korean Insulin Dependent Diabetes Association
Reason: Mr. Kwang-Hoon Kim, personally severely affected by Type 1 diabetes, had overcome the limitations of diseases and disabilities and devoted himself in improving diabetes management at national level. His effort on national/regional activities in diabetes field are distinguished. He has worked extensively in diabetes services field as a health care provider, researcher, and manager of diabetes service, as a founder of the Korean Insulin Dependent Diabetes Association in 2005, now a part of Korea Diabetes Association, is greatly evaluated. He also helped organizing support groups for diabetic patients and their families, establishing, and holding events for the Diabetes Day in Children, holding academic conferences and debates. These outstanding works contributed to improve awareness of diabetes and make societal changes to expand the coverage for children and diabetes support via revision of the Infant Care Act and School Health Act in South Korea.
He has a long-term leadership achievements and contributions for bettering Diabetes Care in Asia.
